29.01.2018, Luxembourg, RTL Group
Sonja Schwetje, Editor-in-Chief of N-TV, is among the 39 experts appointed to the new High-Level Expert Group on online disinformation established by the European Commission.
The High-Level Expert Group on online disinformation comprises representatives from civil society, social media platforms, news media organisations, journalists and academia. It will advise the Commission on scoping the phenomenon of fake news, defining the roles and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders, grasping the international dimension, taking stock of the positions at stake, and formulating recommendations. Its inaugural meeting was held on 15 January 2018.
Besides Sonja Schwetje, Editor-in-Chief of N-TV, who will represent RTL Group, the group also includes representatives from Bertelsmann, Sky News, Google, Twitter and Facebook. Schwetje is a member of the RTL Group News Synergy Committee. In this capacity she has experienced first-hand the major concerns of RTL Group broadcasters’ editors-in-chief and heads of news regarding this important issue. Highly committed to responsible journalism, Schwetje has developed a professional, but also personal interest in tackling fake news. Together with Mark Evans, Head of News at Enex, she is therefore one of the two members of the Synergy Committee that have been tasked with proposing a common RTL Group action framework on the issue of fake news.
