In RTL Group’s Interim results for the first half year of 2021, it was announced that the number of paying subscribers for RTL Group’s streaming services in Germany and the Netherlands was up to more than 3 million –  a growth of 72 per cent (as previously reported). The paying subscribers for RTL Deutschland’s TV Now increased 118.9 per cent year on year to 2.039 million and RTL Nederland’s Videoland grew 20.7 per cent year on year to 1.016 million.

With the growth, both streaming services have reached an impressive threshold – TV Now passed the 2 million subscriber mark, while Videoland has more than 1 million subscribers.

Bernd Reichart, CEO of RTL Deutschland says: “With over two million users, TV Now (soon to be renamed RTL+) is rapidly expanding its leading position among German streamers. A great incentive and a milestone on our joint path to becoming the national cross-media champion.”

During the second quarter of 2021, TV Now’s viewing time increased by 50.5 per cent. The positive development was mainly driven by the wide range of programmes available. During the second quarter, TV Now premiered originals such as the world’s first lesbian dating show Princess Charming (as previously reported), Der große Fake – Die Wirecard-Story and the documentary series Angela Merkel – Frau Bundeskanzlerin, among others. In addition, the TV Now Premium app is available on Sky Q and on Panasonic and Hisense smart TVs, following the successful launch of the partnership with Deutsche Telekom last year (as previously reported).

Sven Sauvé, CEO of RTL Nederland, comments RTL Nederland’s half-year figures: “The first half of 2021 was positive for us financially. This is largely the result of a strongly recovered TV advertising market and the very strong performance of our TV channels. This, combined with the continued growth in the number of Videoland subscribers, has resulted in strong financial results. These results confirm to us that a clear strategy, team spirit and the ability to continue to innovate are crucial to operate successfully in a dynamic and globalising media landscape. With these good financial results, we are creating even more room for further investments in distinctive local content and tech. And that makes the Dutch consumer the ultimate winner.”

In the first six months of 2021, Videoland’s viewing time was up 11.8 per cent compared to the first half of 2020. The growth was largely due to the third season of the Videoland original series Mocro Maffia and the US drama series The Handmaid’s Tale – both of which are exclusively available on Videoland in the Netherlands – and the reality formats Temptation Island: Love or Leave, Love Island and Prince Charming.

RTL Group’s set streaming targets for 2025 remains unchanged:
